Licence and Use
A Note on Sharing
Field Notes Journal is a record of observations—of place, of season, and of time.
The material published here is intended to be used, referenced, and built upon. If it proves useful elsewhere, that is part of its purpose.
Licence
Principle
Unless otherwise stated, all original material on this site is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
This includes:
- Written content
- Images and plates
- Datasets and derived outputs
- Figures, charts, and visualisations
Third-party material may be subject to different terms and is identified where it appears.
Image Licensing Policy
The following principles are used when applying licences to images on this site:
| Owner | Image Content | Licensing |
|---|---|---|
| David Walker | Identifiable individuals | All rights reserved |
| David Walker | Non-identifiable individuals | CC BY-ND 4.0 |
| David Walker | No people present | CC BY 4.0 |
These categories reflect a balance between openness and respect for individuals, particularly where identification or context may be sensitive.
Important
The licence for each image is stated in its caption and should be treated as authoritative.
Where no specific licence is given, the default licence is Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). This includes photomicrographs and other observational images, unless otherwise stated.
While the principles above describe the general approach, individual images may be licensed differently where appropriate.
What This Means
Unless otherwise stated, you are free to:
- Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
- Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material
- Use commercially — including in published or paid work
These permissions are granted provided the conditions below are met.
Conditions of Use
When reusing material from this site, please:
- Provide attribution
- Include the licence
- Indicate if changes were made
Attribution should include:
- Author: David Walker
- Source: Field Notes Journal
- A link to the original page (where possible)
The licence details for the two licences are:
CC BY 4.0 — https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
CC BY-ND 4.0 — https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/
If you modify material licensed under CC BY 4.0 (for example, cropping an image, editing text, or transforming data), a brief note indicating that changes were made is sufficient.

Notes on Datasets
Datasets published on this site are versioned and identified by a reference ID.
If you reuse or redistribute a dataset:
- Retain the dataset ID and version where possible
- Indicate clearly if modifications have been made
- Link back to the source version where possible
This helps maintain traceability between observation and reuse.
Exceptions and Third-Party Material
At present, all material on this site is original to Field Notes Journal unless otherwise stated.
If third-party material is included in future, it will be clearly identified and may be:
- Used under licence from third parties
- In the public domain
- Subject to separate Creative Commons licences
Such material should be treated according to the terms stated alongside it.
A Final Note
Attribution matters—not only as a condition of the licence, but as part of the record.
Clear referencing helps maintain the link between observation and reuse.
